Before you select a powder, regardless of the quality, there are a few things you should take into consideration:
Before you choose a brand, find out how many shades they offer if you fall in the 'in between' category. If yours is a hard skin tone to match, you may have to pick the brand with the closest match even if it's not your favorite.
Alternatively, you could purchase two shades and mix in order to achieve your custom color, but that would mean spending double. Not ideal, but it is an idea.
Sure, these will work for a few applications, but the more you use them, the more dirt, oil, grease and grime builds up. Every swipe across the powder and every swipe across your face with a heavily used applicator will just reapply all of that dirt and grime!
Use a quality brush, instead, and be sure to wash it regularly.

Which one should you use and what's the difference between them, anyways?
There is quite a few differences, actually, and each one has its pros and its cons:
All pressed powder starts as a loose powder. By adding oils, waxes and other ingredients, makeup manufacturers are able to create the right consistency so that they can 'press' them into the compact case.
Due to the added oils, a pressed powder is easier to use for touchups throughout the day since it won't fly around in its case. Many use it in place of a liquid foundation, which seems to work best on those with normal skin (the lucky ones with no oil problems!)
It provides you with heavier coverage than loose powder (great for hiding blemishes and dark spots) but it can get a little cakey if you have oily skin.
You can apply loose powder with a variety of brushes based on the amount of coverage you need. Those of you with excessively oily skin will probably do best with a loose powder, but having a pressed powder in your purse for touch-ups is definitely a great idea.
Then there's the difference between setting powder and finishing powder.
You use them after all of your other makeup has been applied and are mainly used for special events (wedding day, photo shoot or when you'll be on camera) in order to reduce glare.
You'll also find them in both loose powder and pressed powder form.
What we love about Laura Mercier's formula is that it's oil free yet it still has a creamy texture that glides right over your skin. In this, you'll find Jojoba esters, white tea extract and rice lipids to provide you with more natural coverage. It also contains SPF 15, so you get a little extra protection from the sun when you wear this, too.
They don't offer a huge number of shades but there is a good variety among the ones they do have.

If your skin just doesn't agree with the cheaper drugstore brands, then you'll find that a pressed powder like this is worth the extra $$.
L'Oréal has the best pressed powder in the drugstore category for those of you don't want to spend as much as the previous product.
What we love about this pressed powder is that it comes in 32 different shades! It's hard to go wrong with a selection like that.

This is also an oil-free formula that will provide you with light to medium coverage. It also has a hint of pearl pigments in order to give you that flawless glow.
Definitely one of our favorite pressed powders. Give it a try to see if it's right for you!
It was a tossup between L'Oréal and Maybelline, but someone had to come in third!
This has 13 shades, which is more than Laura Mercier but less than L'Oréal.

In terms of quality, it does a great job at reducing the appearance of pores (as the name suggests) and seems to work extremely well with BB creams, CC creams and tinted moisturizers.
It has its life span (a few hours, at most) but that's typical of most products in this price range.
Overall, we definitely feel it deserves to be on our top three. A great product for combination skin and those who are looking for a matte finish!
